Top ten women in terms of power rankings - Part II
This is the second instalment detailing the top ten tennis players on the women’s tour in terms of their power ranking points.
3. Caroline Wozniacki
After triumphing in Montreal, Caroline entered the Flushing Meadows as seeded number one to win the title after the world number one tennis player Serena Williams withdrew from the championship as a result of her right foot surgery.
Until the semis, the Danish tennis player performed like the top-seed, winning all her clashes in straight sets. However, in her semi-final clash with Vera Zvonareva, the Dane was defeated in straight sets, and thus failed to dent the serve and will of her
Russian tennis foe in New York.
Sarcastically, Caroline had defeated Vera in the finals at Montreal two weeks prior to the beginning of the year’s final major, the United States Open tennis tournament.
Caroline, however, had contested in a couple of tennis matches before coming to the final major.
At the moment, the Dane is relaxing before resuming playing at the season end championship, which is going to be held in Doha.
One has to suspect that Caroline will soon be holding that number one mantle, particularly if Serena Williams of America sets the game of tennis aside much longer.
Anyhow, she is placed at number three in our list as the Dane enjoys a power ranking points of 1,307.
4. Venus Williams
It did not seem likely after playing lesser competitive tennis this summer Venus Williams from the United States of America would enjoy any great success at the United States Open tennis tournament in New York.
Earlier this season, Williams had performed quite well, triumphing in Acapulco and Dubai and making it into the finals of Madrid and Miami.
However, Venus got injured and couldn’t play after the grass court Grand Slam tournament at the All England Club. Nonetheless, the American did extraordinarily well, reaching the semi-final at the U.S Open, where she was eventually beaten by the ultimate
winner Kim Clijsters in a tight clash.
Their semi-final match was undoubtedly one of the best of the championship and provided Kim the impetus to wipe the foe slate clean when Vera showed up in the title battle on Saturday.
Venus has now once again qualified for the season ending WTA Tour tournaments in Doha, where she was a finalist to her sister Serena Williams back in 2009. Therefore, it will be exciting to see how the elder Williams approaches the next year now that she
has grown as old as thirty.
Anyhow, Venus deserves a place at number four with a power ranking points of 1,003.
5. Samantha Stosur
Ever since the Australian reached the final of the clay court French Open tennis tournament, Stosur has struggled due to her injuries and disappointment, attempting to get back to the top level that took her to her very first Grand Slam singles final.
Samantha played some great tennis until the last clash of the French Open, where she was toppled by her Italian tennis opponent, Francesca Schiavone.
Coming back to form, the Australian played quite well at the United States Open tennis tournament until she faced the ultimate winner Kim Clijsters in the quarters, taking her to three sets before capitulating in the decider.
An injury in her shoulder badly affected her summer practices, and she didn’t have enough time to prepare for the U.S Open. Nonetheless, Stosur played well overall. The Aussie player should qualify for the WTA Tour tournament in Doha, starting from October.
Samantha will have to decide whether playing in doubles is helping her opportunities to triumph in singles.
Nonetheless, the Aussie is a potential winner in both. However, she may have to sacrifice one to triumph in the other, preventing her body from additional injury and wear. Stosur enjoys the power ranking points 589.
