Top ten women in terms of power rankings- Part III
This is the third and the final installment featuring the top ten women tennis players on the tour in terms of their power ranking points.
6. Kaia Kanepi with a power ranking of 563
Kaia Kanepi was playing some great tennis at this seasons United States Open tennis competition, until she was toppled by Vera Zvonareva in the quarter final battle. Kaia knocked down the fourth seeded Jelena Jankovic in round
three at New York.
The Estonian also managed to win the qualifying rounds earlier to contest in the French Open and Wimbledon.
At the 2010 Wimbledon, Kaia reached the quarter final round where she was eventually lost by Petra Kvitova in an exciting three setter clash. With her powerful serve and heavy ground strokes, Kaia has improved her game along with
the rankings this season without any question.
How far the Estonian can take it is a question that is yet to be answered. 2011 offers yet another season of strong possibilities.
7. Francesca Schiavone with a power ranking of 557
The Italian tennis star Francesca Schiavone triumphed in the final of Barcelona, and then took the world by storm as a result of capturing the French Open title over her top favourite foe, Samantha Stosur.
This improved her rankings in the top ten on the very first occasion in her professional life.
In grabbing the trophy, Francesca registered her name as the third female player from Italy to win a Grand Slam crown.
After triumphing in the French Open, Schiavone was however defeated in the opening round at Eastbourne, and followed that up with another early fall at the grass court Grand Slam championship back in June.
At the final major event, the Italian was seeded number six to win the title. She couldn’t reach the final four however, as the Italian was toppled by her American tennis foe, Venus Williams in a total of two sets. The final match
score was 7-6, 6-4.
The Italian appears all set to make another Grand Slam appearance thought.
8. Dominika Cibulkova with a power ranking of 520
The twenty one year old Slovakian reached her second ever major quarter final at the United States Open tennis tournament this season in New York.
Her first one came at Roland Garros back in 2009 where she did well to advance into the semis. This season she faced and was hammered down by Caroline Wozniacki in the quarters after successfully upsetting her Russian tennis foe,
Svetlana Kuznetsova in the round of sixteen.
Dominika is fond of the hard courts and the clay however so far her career best result has been on the artificial hard surface. She achieved her career high rankings of world number twelve back in 2009.
The Slovakian is one of the rising tennis stars of her country who is working her way up the rankings ladder without any question.
She hopes that her turn to capture the brass tennis ring will take place sooner rather than later.
9. Maria Sharapova with a power ranking of 475
The sizzling Sharapova reached the fourth round of the U.S Open this year where she was was defeated by the top seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.
Both of them fought valiantly however once the breeze settled, Caroline had the better day and triumphed in the clash. Earlier this season in August, Maria had to withdraw from Montreal as a result of her foot injury.
Fortunately, her foot healed just in time for Maria to take part in the United States Open in New York. The Russian’s lower seedings however, forced her to perform like a top ranked contender earlier than Sharapova would have liked.
Maria’s serve looks back to normal, putting behind worries as the Russian had been struggling to completely recover from her shoulder injury.
Ranked now in the top twenty, Maria will soon improve her rankings and get back in the top ten.
10. Svetlana Kuznetsova with a power ranking of 457
Svetlana Kuznetsova entered the Flushing Meadows with a lot of expectations and hopes.
Most of the season, the Russian tennis player looked to flounder, being eliminated early in championships by opponents she should have beaten rather comfortably.
Her ranking began to drop gradually but definitely. After failing to successfully defend her French Open crown, Svetlana’s WTA rankings dropped down to as low as number nineteen in the world.
At last this summer, the Russian began to come back to form, improving her ranking up on the list as well.
Seeded number eleven at the United States Open tennis tournament, Svetlana reached the round of sixteen where she faced and was brushed aside by Dominika Cibulkova in a total of two sets. The final match score was 7-5, 7-6.
