  1. First get a stiff rake and rake away the dead grass and any weeds.

Then loosen the soil with a small shovel and level the ground.

Add seeding soil that you can buy at home depot.

do not  use topsoil seeding soil has more nutrients.

Mix seed into soil and lightly tap down.

Seed again on top, and leave the soil firm but not  hard.

water twice a day gently, keep grass moisturized.

  3. A few golden rules...

    1) - If the lawn needs it de-thatch it and aerate it before top-dressing.

    2) - Only top-dress when the lawn is actively growing. It's a good idea to feed the lawn lightly a week or two before you plan to top dress & give it a light mow the day before.

    3) - Use a very sandy open soil that has been blended specifically for top-dressing. Anything else cannot be raked in. Any blend with large lumps of compost or manure will cause rot & fungal problems.

    4) - The idea of top-dressing is not to put a blanket over the lawn. It's to get soil into the thatch, to fill in dips and bumps and get the lawn level. So don't spread it too thick.

    5) - Don't spread it on a wet lawn or if its about to rain. The soil will go muddy and may then form a hard cap when it drys out.

    6) - Roughly spread the top-dressing mix & then let it sit for an hour or two to dry out. This will make it much easier to evenly rake into the lawn.

    7) - DON'T water immediately and DON'T keep the lawn moist for an extended period as this will promote rots & fungal disorders. Water it well after a couple of days & then resume normal watering.
