Toribio Alcolea wins fourth stage as Broco overall lead in Volta A Portugal Em Biccleta 2011

Andalucia Caja Granada team’s Jose Vicente Toribio Alcolea took his first stage victory after winning the fourth stage of Volta A Portugal Em Biccleta 2011 on Monday, August 8. Hernani Broco retained overall leader’s yellow jersey.
The 26-year-old Spanish cyclists took the total of 4 hours, 28 minutes and 41 seconds to cover the distance of 182.3 kilometres.
With few kilometres remaining, the four cyclists made their first breakaway lead including, Carlos Baltazar (Barbot – Efapel), Ricardo Vilela (Onda – Boavista), Andre Fernando Santos Martins Cardoso (Tavira-Prio) and Sergio Ferreira Sousa (Barbot – Efapel).
All of them managed to take an advantage of a few seconds while Santos Martins and Sergio were caught by the peloton. Ricardo Vilela launched an aggressive attack in the first climb but failed and Baltazar took the lead.
In the final climb, the new group formed including, Toribio Alcolea, Nelson Victorino (Tavira-Prio), joined by second stage winner Sergio Miguel Vieira Ribeiro (Barbot – Efapel) Francesco Gavazzi (Lampre – ISD).
Sergio Miguel and Francesco managed to launch an attack but were unable to hold the pace while Victorino and Toribio Alcolea working well together but Spanish increase his pace and cross the finish line ahead of the other cyclists.
Nelson Victorino of Tavira-Piro was runner-up and Francesco Gavazzi of Lampre-ISD finished third with the same timing of the Spanish.
27 cyclists crossed the finish line with the same timing of Sprinter while Lachlan David Morton of Chipotle Development also wanted to take a part in the leading riders but failed to gain a lead and grabbed 28th place with the difference of 32
seconds ahead of Robbie Squire and David Da Silva Livramento.
Fabricio Ferrari was took the overall King of Mountain (KOM) title with 26 points ahead of race leader Broco. Garikoitz Bravo Oiarbide of Caja Rural took the title of Best Young Rider ahead of Bruno Silva.
Hernani Broco retained his overall standing with the timing of 18 hours, 19 minutes and 58 seconds. Sergio Miguel was runner-up with 3 seconds and Ricardo Mestre finished third with 16 seconds behind Broco.
The next stage will start in Oliveira do Hospital and end in Viseu. All the cyclists will cover the distance of 150.3 kilometres.
