Torii Hunter expected to sign soon: Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers possible destinations
Former Los Angeles Angels’ outfielder Torii Hunter will soon announce which team he is looking to sign a contract with, reports a leading sports website. The Detroit Tigers and the Texas Rangers have shown great interest in acquiring his services for the
next season and it will be interesting to see which one of two American League clubs can get its hands on one of the best outfielders in the game today.
In an interview, Hunter stated that he will not take too long to decide where to sign and Detroit remains one of the possible destinations for him. The right hander has a history of signing quickly. In 2007, he signed a deal with the Angels on Thanksgiving
Day and he expects to secure a deal quickly this year as well.
"I encourage all these players to go through it at least once in their career. It’s a lot of fun going through it. But at the same time, you try to grab those teams early because, before you know it, they might not need you anymore. You try to grab those
teams that best fit you and if you know who you want to play for and you’re talking to those teams, you go ahead and grab them right then and there," Hunter said in an interview.
Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Yankees have also expressed their desire to sign Hunter for the next season. The big advantage the Tigers and the Rangers has over other teams is their ability to put Hunter in position
for a World Series ring.
Tigers, in particular, open the season as the favourites to win the 2013 season. The defending American League Champions have kept most of their team together. Victor Martinez, who missed the entire 2012 season, is also expected to return from a knee injury.
At 37-years-old, it is easy to assume that Hunter’s best days are behind him. However, he had a memorable time on the plate last season as he hit with a .313 average, 92 RBI’s and .817 OPS. It seems he can be the best solution to Tigers outfield problems.
