Torii Hunter eyeing Detroit as perfect landing spot – MLB Update
Torii Hunter had an excellent time on the plate with the Los Angeles Angels last season. Showing great composure and mental toughness, the outfielder hit .313 with 16 home-runs and 92 RBI’s.
However, despite having a wonderful time with the Angels, he became a free agent at the end of the season. Right now, the 37-year-old is seeking a multi-year deal with an American League team. Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and the Atlanta
Braves all have expressed their desire to sign Hunter but it seems the Tigers are the front runners.
According to a leading sports website, the Yankees may not be able to offer him a two year contract. In an interview Hunter stated that he is looking for a two year $26 million deal that could put the Yankees out of the running.
Hunter has also stated that he wanted a sign a deal before Thanksgiving Day. He has a history of sealing deals without wasting time. Detroit seems to be the best landing spot for Hunter as his son Torii Jr. has been recently signed by a football team in
Detroit.
There is another reason why Hunter wants to play for the Tigers. With the likes of Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Austin Jackson in the Tigers’ batting line-up, there will not be any pressure on Hunter. Additionally, he will have the opportunity to play
for team that is the favourite to win next year’s World Series title.
“The process is going to determine the time frame,” Colleran said. “He loved everything about New York and he still does. With the ability to talk to other teams, now it’s all part of the process. Once he has all his info, he’ll decide what he wants to do.”
The Yankees could have a vacancy in right field as well since Nick Swisher is testing the open market to secure a multi-year deal. Yankees’ catcher Russell Martin is also seeking a long term contract on the free agent market. A source confirmed on Monday
the Yankees have an interest in signing Texas Rangers’ Mike Napoli but Martin currently remains their top priority.
