Torii Hunter looking forward to a successful season with Detroit Tigers – MLB News
Former Los Angeles Angels’ outfielder Torii Hunter is looking forward to a successful season with his new team Detroit Tigers, reports detroitnews.com.
As soon as the regular season ended, Hunter told his agent that he wanted to have a meeting with Tigers’ officials to see if he could work out a deal. On Tuesday last week, Hunter had discussions with Manager Jim Leyland and General Manager Dave Dombrowski
and shortly thereafter it was revealed that both parties have agreed to a two year $26 million contract.
There are several reasons why the outfielder wanted to become part of the Tigers. Firstly, he wanted to get hands on his first World Series ring. Hunter has played fifteen Major League Baseball seasons, 10 years in Minnesota and five years in Los Angeles.
However, in all those years he was unable to win the World Series.
"It's just one of those situations where (it felt like), 'I've known this guy for 20 years,'" owner Mike Ilitch said of Hunter. "You get people like that where, right away, you're comfortable. I guess that happens in the dating world, right?"
"Just looking at him and talking to him, I could tell he really wants to win that World Series," Hunter said. "I see that same fire. I can look at him and I feel it because I'm searching for the same thing. I really want to win the World Series, and he's
given me that great opportunity to win the World Series with the Detroit Tigers in 2013, and I want to say thank you Mr. I."
Since the Tigers are the favourites to win the next season, Hunter will have an excellent chance to accomplish that goal.
Hunter’s son Torii Jr., who is been recently signed by a football team, will also be based near Detroit. Playing for the Tigers, he will also have the opportunity to go out there and hang out with him on his days off.
The 37-year-old Hunter had an excellent time on the plate last season as he hit .313 with 16 home-runs and 92 RBI’s. It will be interesting to see if he can perform well in the next season to finally win his first World Series ring.
