Torii Hunter remarks on game losing play as Los Angeles Angels lose to Toronto Blue Jays 2-3
The Los Angeles Angels will be regretting losing a chance to cut their deficit against the Texas Rangers on Monday, September 19 when they were presented with an opportunity to win against the Toronto Blue Jays. Their ambition fell through as a late Mike
McCoy run in the tenth put the Angels on the losing end 2-3. One man who was more upset with the failure was Torii Hunter.
The right fielder had made an amazing throw in the fifth to take out Eric Thames on second base. The Toronto man had slammed the ball through the right corner but Hunter came up to throw the star player out of play, providing pitcher Jerome Williams a comfortable
sigh of relief. The throw would have made Roberto Clemente proud.
The throw in the 10th to catcher Jeff Mathis however had no clean edge that the star was hoping for as Mike McCoy stole the win from the Angels. Hunter moved in to pick up Adam Lind’s grounder in the last play and he threw the ball to the catcher.
He however misplaced his throw as the ball went to the right of the Mathis. McCoy could not be tagged in time and that resulted in a game loss.
"I've only made two throws like that my whole career," Hunter said. "It had to be perfect."
"It's a tough play, my momentum carrying me to my left," Hunter said. "It wouldn't let me set my feet. I saw the replay and didn't have time to get set. [McCoy] went on contact. The throw was to Mathis' right."
Hunter is an important component of the Angels unit and his frustration brings to view the bigger picture. The club was trying to cut the Texas Rangers lead in the American League West. Their loss means they have a less chance to go through. The right fielder
may be low on motivation now as the Angels move to play the next game in renewed spirits tomorrow.
Hunter will need his manager Mike Scioscia to tend to him and make him ready for the encounter. The right fielder smashed a game opening home-run on Monday. That is something the skipper would want to maintain in the next game as well.
