Torii Hunter signs on two year $26 million contract with Detroit Tigers – MLB Update
Former Los Angeles Angels’ outfielder Torii Hunter has signed on a two year $26 million contract with the Detroit Tigers, reports a leading sports website. The Tigers have not made an official announcement as yet but Hunter did not hide the news on his Twitter
account.
“The decision was not simply that we didn’t see the ability to fit Torii Hunter’s salary into a payroll figure,” General Manager Jerry Dipoto said at the time of the decision. “It was his salary in conjunction with where he’d play on the field. We want to
allow Mike Trout and Peter Bourjos and Mark Trumbo the ability to play on a regular basis.”
“Found a job! Headed to Motown to win that ring!” read Hunter’s twitter profile after he was able to seal a deal with the Tigers.
Hunter is expected to join the Spring Training Campaign to fine tune his swing. The 37-year-old outfielder had a great time on the plate with the Angels last season as he hit .313 with 16 home-runs and 92 RBI’s.
The right hander has the ability to up his game play under pressure and that is what makes him an asset. In addition to his impressive hitting skills, Hunter brings great value to the table with his solid defensive techniques.
According to sources, Hunter visited Detroit on Tuesday to have a meeting with the Tigers’ officials. Hunter wanted a contract worth $26 million and the Tigers had no hesitation in making him the offer as they wanted someone like Torii in their batting line-up.
Hunter has not won the World Series title in his 17-year long Major League Baseball career. In his time in Detroit, he will have an excellent chance to end that drought. The Tigers will start the next season as the favourites to win the World Series next
season and it will be interesting to see if Hunter can live up to the expectations.
His son Torii Jr. has also been signed on by a football team in Detroit. Having signed a contract with the Tigers, Hunter will also be able to spend some quality time with his son.
