Torii Hunter’s job is to play not teach, says Detroit Tigers’ Manager Jim Leyland – MLB News

Although Manager Jim Leyland did not attend Torii Hunter’s press conference at Comerica Last month, he took some time out to have a word about his playing position in the upcoming season.
In an interview with a leading sports website, Leyland talked about why Hunter should be focusing on his playing position rather than helping the youngster in the Tigers’ Minor League system. He added that Hunter has not been signed to become a coach or
teach anything to the players as even that is something that Hunter does naturally.
The Tigers agreed to a two year $26 million deal with the former Los Angeles Angels’ outfielder a couple of weeks ago. The reason why the Tigers offered a lucrative contract was to make sure the Tigers’ middle order does not collapse like it did in the past
season.
"I think Torii Hunter is the type of guy who can help all players, if players are willing to listen," Leyland said Monday afternoon. "But that's not going to be an assignment for him. I think he's one of those guys where it's just natural."
"That will just happen," Leyland said, pointing out Hunter commands "instant respect."
He added, "But I don't think it's something you ask him to do. We definitely have a two-way player, and the more two-way players you get, it's definitely better for the manager. We felt we were very, very fortunate he wanted to play Detroit."
The 37-year-old Hunter had expressed his desire to work with young guys including centre fielder Austin Jackson and skipper Leyland was quick to react. Hunter, a nine time Gold Glove winner, is expected to play for the Tigers in 2013.
He hit career best .313 average with 16 home-runs and 92 RBI’s in 2012. The Tigers wanted to bring him in to solve their outfield problem. Additionally, Hunter can help the Tigers improve their defence and athleticism in the outfield.
It will not be wrong to say that he is a multi-faceted player and the Tigers will be expecting him to continue the good work in 2013 to help them claim the World Series trophy.
