Specifically, what is responsible for tornado development in tropical systems?

Do tropical storms and hurricanes spawn tornadoes on both water and land, or just on land?

How powerful are the tornadoes spawned by tropical systems usually?

  1. as wind bands spiral in towards the low pressure center of the storm, they will converge at times, causing individual thunderstorms within these bands to start to rotate, which can cause tornadoes.if the tornado develops over water,it's called a waterspout.most tornadoes generated by tropical systems are relatively weak:usually an ef-0 or ef-1.

  2. Tropical storms and hurricanes can and occasionally do spawn tornadoes. They are most likely to occur along the outer rainbands of the system, well away from the center. This is because in these rainbands the low level wind shear (where winds change direction and speed significantly with increasing altitude) is enhanced. This causes small and shallow areas within individual storms to acquire rotation, which in some cases can go on to produce mainly small and brief tornadoes. They can form over both land and water, but tend to form on land more often due to slightly better instability.  The tornadoes are usually not strong and last only a short time.

  3. The counter-clockwise spin in hurricanes in the Northern Hemisphere and the clockwise spin on tropical cyclones in the Southern Hemisphere are responsible for tornadoes. They can form both on land and over the water. It depends on how powerful they are. The winds could range from 65mph and greater.
