Tornado or Cyclone?

Was the storm that hit New Richmond, Wisconsin in 1899 a tornado or a cyclone? We had a discussion about it in my science class today and no one could agree what it was.? so Please help if you can!! thank you

  1. It certainly wasn't a [tropical] cyclone; they form and sustain themselves over the ocean. Further research (on Wikipedia, that is) confirms that it was a tornado (it could have also been a wind event, given your options, prompting need for further insight). The article is listed below.

    Also: It's pretty clear that the questioner meant a tropical cyclone. A typical low system (probably no serious wind damage) or a tornado (tornado versus tornado?) would probably not fit the bill.


  2. It was a tornado and it was also a cyclone, which mean the same thing in that part of the country.  Cyclone has a bunch of different meanings; saying "tornado" makes it clear which one of the meanings you want.
