I just moved to tennessee and have never before lived in a place that had tornados. Yesterday one was spotted in my town and it scared me really bad. I have no idea what to do in a tornado. We dont have a basement, and we live in a 2 story condo. the bottom floor doesnt have a center room without wondows other than the hot water heater closet(its en electric heater) would it be safe to go in there? how should i prepare for the next one. I live alone and my husband is deployed, it was really scary for me so please help ease my mind.

  1. leave the place. i'm preparing to leave mine too coz maybe i'll be a victim of sea rise level  which is a hot topic nowadays.

  2. Actually, a bathroom is not the best place to be, because they are often on the exterior wall of a home.  Hot water heaters are not a good idea, what if it burst and the water comes in contact with live electric wires? The safest place to be during a tornado(if u don't have a basement that is)is in an interior hallway. Reason being is it 's more likely, even in a bathroom, for a wall to be collapsed inward causing it to fall on you or ripped off leaving you exposed to dangerous debris.  If you are in an interior hallway there are more walls to support those which have fallen. Cover yourself (and whomever else is with you)with blankets if you have time, if not, don't worry about them.  Try to kneel down and face your head toward the wall(with your head on the floor, also)and cover your head and neck the best you can with your hands.

    Best of luck, stay safe.

  3. The downstairs bathroom is one of the safest rooms in the house ( the bathtub) it is made more stable due to the plumbing, and if there is a window in the bathroom, use a book or something to hold over your head in case the window breaks this is to keep glass from falling on and cutting you, I was raised in Georgia and tornados can be scary, if it is to scary for you, you could go to a neighbors house. Also if you are driving when a tornado is spotted it is best to pull over and get out of the car and lay down in a ditch. There are websites with tornadoes do's and don'ts, I would give that a try.
