  1. that is my biggest fear!! When i am driving and there is even a threat of a tornado, i look for the nearest via duct (overpass) and that is where I would go to hide. Even if I have to drive back to it, that's what i would do.

  2. No. There's a few problems with that. If you lay flat and the tornado has extremely powerful winds such as an ef4 or ef5 its likely to pull you out of the ditch. It can also settle debris in the ditch as well. When debris is pelting or falling on you, a person must cover their heads in order to protect themselves. Some twisters can be accompanied by very heavy rain which could flood the ditch, so you could theoretically drown. If you abandon your car and its 20 or 100ft away from the ditch the twister will pick it up or atleast roll it, which could be very dangerous.

Your safest in a building or house, if a tornado is "chasing"  you down the best thing to do is to either drive at a 90 degree angle away from the twisters path or abandon and hit the ditch, its your last resort!

  3. Very good point. No i would not feel safe. If i heard a tornado was coming, i would get in my car, hit the gas, and drive in the opposite direction of the tornado as fast as i can. I'm sure the police would understand i'm running for my life.  What happens if you are in a open ditch. Debri can land on ya and what if the tornado goes right over ya? lol.

  4. When it's all you have . . .
