Tornado watch?

i live in virginia and they said their is a tornado watch and its in effect wat does that mean their is going to be a tornado?

A watch simply means that conditions are favorable for a tornado to develop. A Warning or alert will tell you a tornado has touched down. Keep an eye open to the weather channel until the watch is over and if they say there is a tornado warning or alert for your area, head to the safest place in your house (basement, interior closet, bathtub, etc)

i live in southern new jersey and i also have a tornado watch.

a tornado watch is just a indication that the conditions are right for a tornado, in other words a tornado may be POSSIBLE.

what you really need to worry about is a TORNADO WARNING.  that means that a tornado has FORMED and SEEN.  if you get a tornado warning, SEEK SHELTER IMMEDIATELY!  the basement or storm cellar is the best place to seek shelter.  if you do not have a basement or storm cellar, seek shelter in a downstairs bathroom or closet.  if you have a bathtub in the bathroom, get a pillow or a couch cushion and cover yourself so flying debris will not hit you.  if you do not have a bathtub, the bathroom is still "reinforced" by all that metal plumbing.  a downstairs closet under the stairs is also a decent place to hide.

It does not mean that there is going to be a tornado.

It just means that thunderstorms are favorable for the development of severe weather large hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph this also includes tornadoes to.

Also, I assume they wouldn't be watching the skies unless there was something to be looking for. So probably yes tornado alert!

No, it does not mean that there is going to be a tornado.

It does mean that conditions are favorable for tornado development.  And that you should pay close attention to further weather announcements.  And be prepared to head quickly to a safe location if a Tornado Warning is issued.
