I'll be driving from PA to CO next week, Basically heading right down 80 into Rocky Mountain National Park ( INDIANA, ILLINOIS, IOWA, and NEBRASKA, then crossing into WYOMING). I was wondering if tornadoes are common in those areas for this time of year?

  1. Tornadoes are common in the area of Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska anytime of year. Once you get towards Wyoming and Colorado they become less common. Be aware that tornadoes can form at anytime with little or no warning. If one is spotted or a warning is issued, seek a safe shelter immediately. Since your driving seek shelter at a rest stop or the nearest building at the nearest exit. If no shelter is available, lie in the nearest low lying spot with your hands over your head. Do not attempt to drive away from a tornado with your automobile no matter how fast your driving. Tornado winds can easily pick it up and turn it over. But hopefully there will be no tornadoes.

  2. yeah, they are

  3. You might want to go to another source for this, just guessing !!!,good luck !!

  4. tornadoes are not common anywhere in the united states in August, however that does not mean it can not happen . i live in oklahoma and have seen news reports of tornadoes in every month of the year but, they are most common april, may, and june.  the exception to this is in southern states following a hurricane that has hit land

  5. Since I live in Nebraska, I'll give you the straight answer...

In this area (at least Iowa, Nebraska and Wyoming) tornado season is long over. The best time to see them is from late April through June because after that the weather conditions and temperatures just aren't favorable. Having said that, there still are tornadoes that develop in these parts but the chances you'll run into one now is about slim to none. Even during the big months they aren't too much of a worry, just keep the radio on (we have signs indicating weather radio channels on the interstates in Nebr), keep an eye to the sky and stop at a town if it starts looking too intense.

The bigger severe weather threats this time of year are large hail and damaging winds with "squall line" thunderstorms. (Although it hasn't rained here in like a month)

I'd say don't worry about it, worry more about road construction and lousy drivers on I-80.

  6. kinda, i think

  7. out of all those states, Iowa and Nebraska are known to have the most tornadoes out of that list. But, since you are talking about at this time of the year, none of them should have very many tornadoes. If you were going out there in April-July, you might run into them.
