Toro Rosso driver Jean-Eric Vergne says ‘no friends in F1’ – Formula 1 news
Toro Rosso driver Jean-Eric Vergne says that he does not expect to be friends with any of his other Formula 1 contenders while saying that he feels confident that he will get along well with his teammate Daniel Ricciardo.
Vergne and Ricciardo have not come together for the first time as they have been teammates before in the Red Bull Racing junior team from 2008 to 2011. Moreover, they both have been said to be quite friendly, on which Vergne agreed too.
“It's going well; we've known each other for a long time. He is someone with whom I get along well, and with whom it is pleasant to work with,” Vergne told L’Equipe.
However, after saying that he gets along quite well with his teammate at Rosso, he stated that he did not expect to have any other friends in the rival teams.
“We can be friends, but it's impossible to be friends with another F1 driver - unless you are sure you'll be first and have the best car to drive. But for me it is inconceivable that you can be friends with someone that you want to beat,” he said.
Vergne’s assertion regarding making friends at F1 is quite understandable because the history has witnessed a strong tussle amongst the drivers of the rival teams. Moreover, the clash has not been limited to the drivers of the rival team but there are number
of examples showing bitter relationships amongst the drivers of the same team.
Vergne has spent many years in the junior F1 and on having a drive at the top of Autosport he acknowledges that it is quite a big move of his career.
“Everything is harder, everything is bigger too,” he said.
Vergne said that he had gone to a team of 350 people with comparatively huge budgets from a team of 40 people.
Furthermore, he said that the car with an increased speed, technicality and complexity was quite different as compared to the car he used to drive before. He also said that it is hard to adapt such a car which has 30 buttons after driving a car which has
only 5 buttons on its steering wheel.
