Toronto Blue Jays' pitcher Brandon Morrow relaxed after signing 3-year, $20-million deal
The Toronto Blue Jays' starting pitcher Brandon Morrow seems quite happy about his recent extension with the franchise worth $20 million for three years.
The three-year deal will pay Morrow $4 million in 2012 while later $8 million in the next two seasons. Blue Jays have a $10 million option in 2015 for Morrow including a $1 million buyout.
Morrow, earlier was not sure as to whether he will get the extension from the Blue Jays or not but as soon as he was given the new contract, he felt relaxed and started to show a new level of commitment for the team in the upcoming season.
After a successful three year signing with the Blue Jays, Morrow came out in the media and explained why he now feels more optimistic about 2012.
Morrow said, “There’s a certain level of kind of (jerk) you need to be to really succeed. You look at the best they’ve all got a little bit of that in them, especially when things are on the line.”
He added, “I think the whole string of starts leading up to that kind of made me mad, I guess. A lot of times you pitch better with a little chip on your shoulder.”
Later, Blue Jays’ general manager Alex Anthopoulos commented on Morrow’s temperament and work-ethic as he feels that the player will positively contribute to achieve better results next season.
Anthopoulos said, “From Brandon’s standpoint, he’s set for life. He’s where he wants to be, he’s in an organization, a city that he wants to be in with teammates that he loves.”
Stats show that the last three games Morrow played for the Blue Jays in 2011 was nothing but an enormous display of frustration. He was not given the surety if he will be playing for the Blue Jays next season or not. Playing against slightly less competitive teams, he allowed two runs in 21 innings striking-out 24 to bring his record to 11-11.
However, the Blue Jays signed him before 2012 avoiding arbitration with the starter who is also considered the teams Number two starter behind staff ace Ricky Romero.
