Toronto Blue Jays’ Corey Patterson in hospital after fastball hits head – MLB Spring Season
Toronto Blue Jays’ Corey Patterson ended up in the hospital during their 11-8 win over the Boston Red Sox on March 25 after getting hit in the head by a fastball from Daniel Bard.
Patterson fell to the ground as he was unable to get out of the way and the ball hit him on the back of his helmet quite hard.
Ricardon Nanita replaced Patterson as he was taken to the hospital to get checked out for any serious head injury.
"There's no preliminary report or anything," manager John Farrell said. "He's gone to the hospital to get a CT scan. He was conscious when he came off the field, obviously. Until further tests come back, there's no real report yet."
Any shot to the head like the one Patterson took, can be very serious. The importance of wearing a helmet was highlighted and appreciated. It seems that Patterson was lucky that the ball hit him on the helmet, thus reducing the velocity and preventing any
serious injury.
However, Patterson will be staying overnight in the hospital to be monitored, as is the usual case when there is a head injury. The CT scan will be important to determine the extent of any injury that the pitch may have caused.
Speaking to reporters, Bard said, “I just went and watched it on video. You could see by my reaction [that] it scared me as much as anybody. It was good that he was obviously moving around. When I got back in here, I had them call over to make sure he was
OK.”
It was scary moment for both batter and pitcher as it could have been quite a serious situation if Patterson was unable to get to his feet. Lucky, it seems that there are no reports so far of any serious injury to player and it looks as if he will be alright.
The Blue Jays will have a sigh of relief as the regular season is right around the corner and they will want to have all their players at full strength.
