Toronto Blue Jays’ GM Alex Anthopoulos rebuilding the team – MLB News
According to sources, the 12 player mega deal between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Miami Marlins has been approved by Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig.
Blue Jays had one of their worst seasons last year as they finished fourth on the American League East Division standings table. Following their poor performances, the Blue Jays were criticised heavily by their fans.
"I am sensitive to the concerns of the fans of Miami regarding this trade, and I understand the reactions I have heard," Selig added in the statement. "Baseball is a social institution with important social responsibilities and I fully understand that the
Miami community has done its part to put the Marlins into a position to succeed with beautiful new Marlins Park.”
"Going forward, I will continue to monitor this situation with the expectation that the Marlins will take into account the sentiments of their fans, who deserve the best efforts and considered judgment of their club,” he added.
Now, the General Manager Alex Anthopoulos is determined to build a team that will be capable of winning the World Series. In an effort to improve the team’s batting line-up, the Blue Jays officially signed former San Francisco Giants’ outfielder Melky Cabrera
for a two year $16 million deal.
Cabrera was hitting .346 for the San Francisco Giants when he was suspended on August 15 for drug use. He had 25 doubles, 10 triples, 11 home-runs with 60 runs and 13 stolen bases in that span. It will be interesting to see if he can give similar results
in the next season to help the Blue Jays claim the AL East title.
The 12 player blockbuster deal will allow the Blue Jays get John Buck, Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle, Josh Johnson and Emilio Bonifacio from Miami for seven players.
Miami, on the other hand, will be getting Yunel Escobar, Henderson Alvarez, Anthony DeSclafani, Justin Nicolino and Adeiny Hechavarria. Blue Jays will also receive cash from Miami as part of the deal. However, Miami’s fans did not like the deal
With the deal will come increased expectations and it will be interesting to see if the Blue Jays can live up to those expectations.
