Toronto Blue Jays annihilate Detroit Tigers 8-3 at Rogers Centre – MLB Update

Toronto Blue Jays annihilated the Detroit Tigers 8-3 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario on Friday, July 27 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The Tigers made an absolutely terrific start to the contest. Third baseman Miguel Cabrera continued his excellent hitting form as he homered to left in the first inning to put Detroit on the board.
All Star first baseman Prince Fielder also showed just what he is capable of, adding a solo home-run to right-centre in the first to double Tigers’ advantage to 2-0.
However, Jim Leyland and company were unable to capitalise on their strong start and the Blue Jays fought back brilliantly to snatch a thrilling victory. Edwin Encarnacion earned an RBI single to right in the first and catcher Jeff Mathis doubled to deep-left
in the fourth to help Toronto comeback from behind for a 4-2 lead.
Omar Vizquel made a useful contribution with the bat in the seventh and left fielder Travis Snider connected for a two run home-run in the eighth to wrap up an impressive Blue Jays’ victory.
Starting pitcher Carlos Villanueva overcame a shaky start to improve to 6-0. After giving up two runs in the first inning, he regrouped himself to play a key role in deciding the outcome of the game. Relief pitcher Aaron Loup allowed just a hit in 1.1 innings
and Casey Janssen pitched the perfect ninth to improve his ERA to 2.27.
"What he has shown repeatedly is that he is going to keep the game under control," Farrell said. "He sets the tone, he throws strikes and is capable of making the key pitch in tough situations."
"We've got to do a better job of shutting the door on some of these teams that we're more than capable of doing," said Tigers’ starting pitcher Rick Porcello, who gave up five runs on six hits to take his sixth loss of the season.
Despite their comprehensive win on Friday, the Blue Jays remain at fourth place on the American League East Division standings and it will be interesting to see if they can sweep the Tigers to grab one of the wild card spots.
