Toronto Blue Jays beat Seattle Mariners 8-3 – MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays managed to avoid an embarrassing series sweep, securing a comfortable 8-3 win at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario on Thursday, September 13 in the finale of their three match series.
Starting pitcher Henderson Alvarez displayed some top quality throwing skills as he gave up just five hits and three runs in seven solid innings for his ninth win of the season. Striking-out batters at key situations, he created all sorts of problems for
Seattle.
Relief pitchers Brad Lincoln and Aaron Loup combined to pitch two scoreless innings to help Blue Jays hold on to their lead. Mariners’ starter Felix Hernandez, on the other hand, had a forgettable time on the mound as he allowed just ten hits and seven runs
in just four innings to take his eighth loss of the season.
Adam Lind homered to right in the first inning to put Blue Jays 2-0 ahead. Brett Lawrie singled to centre and Edwin Encarnacion homered to left in the fourth inning to give Blue Jays a commanding 7-2 lead.
"I have eight years playing in the big leagues, I never got to 80," Encarnacion said. "It's not easy to get to 100 RBIs. Not many people make it to 100 RBIs so that's the bigger thing for me."
"Oh, man, that was long," Hernandez said with a smile on his face. "That's a pretty good one right there. It was a good pitch, it was down."
"(Hernandez) is the guy that I always follow," Alvarez said through a translator in a post game interview. "I'm always looking forward to see what he's doing so he can accomplish the same thing."
Mariners outclassed the Blue Jays in first two games of the series and they were hoping to continue the good work in the finale to earn a rare series sweep at Rogers Centre but that did not turn out to be the case.
John Farrell and company used their home conditions superbly to avoid another humiliating defeat. It will be interesting to see if the Blue Jays can learn from their mistakes to end the season on a positive note.
