Toronto Blue Jays beaten 1-2 by Baltimore Orioles – MLB Update
Matt Wieters showed some great HR hitting abilities as the Toronto Blue Jays were outplayed by Baltimore Orioles 1-2 at the Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Tuesday, April 24.
In the opening game of three match series between the two sides, at times, the Blue Jays were extremely unlucky. The pitching lineup did an extremely great job to hold the strong Orioles’ batters unit to just two runs but it was the hitters who let their side down.
Credit must be given to Orioles’ starter Tommy Hunter who pitched with great control and accuracy to put his team in the driving seat. In a tense battle, he outpitched his counterpart from Toronto Henderson Alvarez.
"Tommy got us deep in the game and we were able to pass the load around and put people in positions they were equipped to handle," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.
Hunter made the most of available opportunities and he allowed just one run on three hits in six solid innings. Only Eric Thames managed to get past first base against the right hander. In some ways, Hunter was extremely fortunate to get his second win of the season. The four relievers who followed him worked extremely hard to seal victory for the starter.
"Those guys came in and it was quick and it was effective and they got the job done," Hunter said. "Tip your cap to those guys. They've been good all year and hopefully they continue to do it."
In hitting department of the game, Matt Wieters once again put up a brilliant show as he scored the decisive run in the fourth, lifting Orioles’ spirits. Adam Jones and Endy Chavez also made useful contributions to help Baltimore take 1-0 lead in the first inning.
"He pitched exceptionally well. He did his job," Toronto manager John Farrell said.
"It's one of the breaks that didn't go our way," Farrell said of Alvarez.
For Toronto, Eric Thames hit a towering home run to the right field in the third but he failed to stop the opponents from earning a well deserved victory. Alvarez was also very unfortunate, taking the loss despite tossing up seven strong innings for the Blue Jays.
