Toronto Blue Jays beaten by Detroit Tigers 1-4 in series finale – MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays were beaten by the Detroit Tigers 1-4 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario on Sunday, July 29 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Blue Jays’ starting pitcher Brett Cecil ended up with another disappointing loss that damaged his record to 2-4. Cecil has not allowed more than three runs in any of his last three starts, without winning any of them.
"I'm not going to change anything," Cecil said. "Just keep doing what I'm doing. Wins will come."
Allowing just four hits and three runs with seven strike-outs, he put up another decent performance on Sunday.
"The old adage is solo home runs aren't going to beat you, it's what happens prior," Farrell said. "The walk contributed. I thought he threw a number of good pitches that were borderline and he didn't get a call on. But still, six plus innings, I thought
he did a good job here today."
Tigers’ starter Doug Fister, on the other hand, gave up just a run in eight innings for his fifth win of the season. He will be looking to continue his excellent work in the upcoming games to lead the Tigers to their second straight American League Central
Division triumph.
"He's pretty good at staying calm when he gets in a tight situation," Leyland said. "That's a trait of a real good pitcher."
Blue Jays, who had the better of their opponents in both the first two games of the series, were unable to make the most of available opportunities on Sunday, allowing the Tigers to avoid a humiliating series sweep.
The offence, in particular, wasted too many scoring opportunities, allowing the Tigers to dictate terms. Toronto’s only run came in the first inning, thanks to Rajai Davis’ single on a groundout from Colby Rasmus.
The Tigers responded immediately as Delmon Young walked and Ryan Raburn doubled. Short-stop Jhonny Peralta ended his seven day hitting drought in an emphatic fashion as he connected for a three run home-run in the second to lay the foundation of a stunning
Tigers’ victory.
