Toronto Blue Jays beaten by Detroit Tigers 2-3 – MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays were beaten by the Detroit Tigers 2-3 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Wednesday, August 22 in second game of their three match series.
Tigers looked to attack right from the start of the contest. Omar Infante looked in top form and he scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning to put Tigers on the board. Jeff Baker doubled Tigers’ lead to 2-0 in the fifth innings.
Edwin Encarnacion scored the opening run for the Blue Jays in the sixth inning and shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria added a run in form of sacrifice fly hit but the Tigers held on to their lead without too much trouble to wrap up an impressive win.
Toronto’s starting pitcher Aaron Laffey was unlucky to end up on the losing side. He gave up just five hits and three runs in six solid innings.
"I thought Aaron threw the ball really well," Blue Jays’ manager John Farrell said in a post game interview. "We had an error in one inning and missed a bang-bang play at the plate, and that puts you on the short end of a 3-2 scoreline."
"We're struggling to score runs, so we're trying to manufacture something with two outs," Farrell said. "Valverde has a slow release, so we were going to go after him even with medium-speed runners. We're trying to force Avila into making a perfect throw,
and he did. You just tip your cap on that one."
Credit should be given to the Tigers who carried over the winning momentum to take an impassable 2-0 series lead. Manager Jim Leyland will be expecting his team to give similar performances over the next few weeks to replace the American League Central Division
leaders Chicago White Sox.
Blue Jays, once again struggled to make the most of scoring opportunities and the Tigers made them pay the ultimate price. Manager John Farrell will be extremely disappointed with what he has seen after the All Star Break. It will be interesting to see if
Farrell and company can lift their spirits to end the season on a positive note.
