Toronto Blue Jays conquer Boston Red Sox 7-4 to win series 3-1 – MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays scored four runs in the second inning to annihilate the Boston Red Sox 7-4 on Thursday, September 8 and complete a comprehensive 3-1 series victory over the American League stalwarts at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario.
J.P. Arencibia smashed a massive 426 feet three-run home-run down the left-flank in the second inning after Kelly Johnson had earlier initiated the scoring for the Blue Jays in the same inning. Brett Lawrie and David Cooper completed their respective runs
off Arencibia’s hit to set the tone for Toronto and impose a valuable four-run lead over the Red Sox.
Edwin Encarnacion played as designated hitter for the Blue Jays, replacing Jose Bautista for the role and rightly justifying his selection with a home-run in the third inning to extend Toronto’s lead to five runs. Bautista played as right outfielder but
failed to impress on the plate, going 0-for-3 to bring his average down to .303 for the season. Bautista was effective in the previous game and will be looking to find consistency to become a constant threat on the plate.
Ricky Romero pitched into the seventh inning and restricted the Red Sox to just three-runs in his spell to compliment the hard work of his team’s batters. Romero threw 113 pitches over 6.2 innings, generating 72 strikes and striking-out 7 batters to improve
his ERA to 3.01 for the season. He gave away three runs in the seventh inning after showing signs of weariness. Jason Varitek, Darnell McDonald and Jacoby Ellsbury scored a run each to reduce the deficit to two-runs at the top of the seventh. Marco Scutaro
was further promoted in the line-up and was used as a table setter in the game. He impressed again, going 3-for-4 and driving in two runs to escalate his batting average to .291 for the season.
Eric Thames, however, was quick to reply for the Blue Jays as he homered at the bottom of the seventh before Lawrie added his second run of the game in the eighth to regain a four-run lead over Boston. Varitek’s home-run effort in the last inning gave hope
to the visitors but was not enough to match their opposition.
