Toronto Blue Jays defeat Baltimore Orioles 5-4 – MLB Update
Brett Lawrie made a memorable Major League debut on Friday, August 5 to help the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-4 at Oriole Park.
Lawrie went for a single in the first at-bat and then drove in a single in the eighth to finalise the victory for the Blue Jays.
Having gone under pressure, the Blue Jays were rescued in the second inning with his first Major League hit. He was predictably happy. "It might be somewhere," he said. "It might be. I'm still getting stuff out of my ears. I’m glad I got the first one out
of the way."
However, one of the most disappointing performances on Friday was that of Orioles’ starter Tommy Hunter who gave up 8 hits and allowed four runs – something that eventually led to the defeat of Baltimore.
"I didn't get ahead, I didn't finish when I got ahead and when I got behind, I gave up hits," Hunter said. "There's really no excuses for it. When they go out and give you two early runs like that, you've got to go out and get a couple goose eggs up there,
and I didn't do that tonight."
Friday’s game, however, was started with a big hit in the very first inning by Adam Jones. Having been a reliable hitter and scorer for the Orioles, Jones hit came against Toronto’s starter Brad Mills that gave an early 2-0 lead to the Orioles.
The 2-hit two-run first inning did not last long as the debutant Brett Lawrie took Tommy Hunter to task and executed the first single for the Blue Jays. That run received wild applause owing to his debut.
Following Lawrie’s single, Yunel Escobar went for another hit that put an end to their deficit, levelling the score instantaneously. Hunter gave up four hits in the inning which proved to be costly for the Orioles.
Tommy Hunter was hardly settled when he was subject to more hits in the third inning. Colby Rasmus singled to right, enabling Jose Bautista to score the third run and Aaron Hill snapped another single to give a 4-2 lead to the Blue Jays.
That was the lead that Brad Mills effectively maintained with great innings that he pitched. Matt Wieters came up with a single in the sixth inning to bring down the lead to 4-3. However, Aaron Hill snapped in the fifth run for the Blue Jays, a lead that
was to stay intact.
Frank Francisco tossed a shut-out eighth and Jon Rauch threw a one-run ninth to turn the 5-4 lead into victory for the Blue Jays to provide the team a perfect start in the three-game series.
