Toronto Blue Jays defeat Boston Red Sox 5-4 – MLB Update
The Toronto Blue Jays put in a brilliant performance and overpowered the Boston Red Sox 5-4 in the second and last outing of the series at Fenway Park in Boston on Wednesday, September 14.
Blue Jays were given an 18-6 defeat in the last game and their bullpen was in the mood to get some revenge.
The Blue Jays’ batting squad made a promising comeback in the eighth inning and snatched the game from the Red Sox. Blue Jays’ eighth inning started with a walk of Edwin Encarnacion who reached first base from a loose pitch of Daniel Bard. He allowed another
walk to Kelly Johnson and Encarnacion, who has scored a game opening RBI single in the first inning, stole second base.
With two bases loaded, Mark Teahen sacrificed to the catcher and reached first base on a throwing error by Bard. Encarnacion occupied third while Johnson reached second base. Arencibia turned the best chance of the game into an RBI single grounding out to
third, as Encarnacion scored. Johnson, who was part of the Blue Jays’ first two runs in the first inning, occupied the third and Teahen reached at second when Loewen first missed two strikes and played two fouls before touching an RBI double generating single
to centre-field.
The game suddenly turned into the Blue Jays favour as their closer Frank Francisco tossed a perfect ninth inning in a crucial time and saved his 15th outing of the season.
The win cost the Red Sox another loss in last seven days. They have one only one outing in their previous seven outings. Now the Red Sox have 86 wins and are struggling hard to make it into the postseason.
The batting line-up also helped starter Ricky Romero to grab his 15th win of the season. Romero had given four runs on six hits in the middle of the game and his chance to snatch this outing has dimmed. However, his record improved to 15-10 with
a 3.02 ERA in this season.
Red Sox Marco Scutaro, Kevin Youkilis and Jason Varitek each scored an RBI single. Adrian Gonzalez launched his 26th home-run of the season.
"It's just another loss. I don't think it's any tougher than any other loss," first baseman Adrian Gonzalez said. "We've got to find a way in the next series to play better baseball."
Daniel Bard lost his third outing of the season.
Blue Jays have little to no chance to make an entry in the postseason but their performance in the September has been on the top.
It was a real blow for the Boston Red Sox as they have suffered a serious set-back in their race to make it to the postseason. Boston has spent a poor September as they have won only three games in this month. Their next competition against the Tampa Bay
Rays might give them a chance to make an impression. The Blue Jays has lost two of their last three outings against the Baltimore Orioles but their overall performance in this month is a serious concern for the Boston Red Sox.
