Toronto Blue Jays defeat Boston Red Sox 9-7 – MLB Update
Travis Snider drove in a pair of runs with three doubles on Monday, July 4 in the Toronto Blue Jays’ 9-7 win over an otherwise confident Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
In a game dominated by the offence, Rajai Davis also added two doubles in the Blue Jays’ emphatic win.
However, recalled from Triple-A only a day earlier, Snider was the highlight of the night for Jays. "I think I was so excited I could barely run," said Snider. "I don't know if you saw the base running."
The Red Sox which ranks second in the American League East Standings with 49 wins, trailing behind the Yankees with 50 wins, had probably not steadied themselves for this turn of events with John Lackey failing to contain the Blue Jays’ offence, particularly
Snider.
The Blue Jays had an early 3-0 lead by the end of the second inning with Jose Bautista’s single on an error by Youkilis and two homers that came in the 3-hit second inning of Lackey which enabled Aaron Hill and John McDonald to take the lead up.
The 5-hit and four-run third devastated the Red Sox effectively as Lackey seemed to be reeling immensely, failing to prove his efficacy as a strong pitcher. Adam Lind, Aaron Hill and Travis Snider opened the floodgates of runs and hits against Lackey in
the third to take the lead to 7-0.
"Overall, I thought my arm felt pretty good. Just didn't locate well," Lackey said. "I would have fixed it if I had known. Some soft ones fell in on good pitches and made some bad pitches that got hit hard. It kind of all added up to that."
Brandon Morrow remained invulnerable and thoroughly effective until the fifth inning, keeping the Blue Jays’ 7-0 lead intact. However, he was subject to massive hits in the same inning when he gave up three hits and allowed four runs.
Jacoby Ellsbury first drove in two runs followed by the singles of Dustin Pedroia and Adrian Gonzalez that momentarily brought the Toronto lead down to 7-4. Morrow remained an unchangeable option for the Blue Jays in the sixth inning as he pitched a hitless
and scoreless inning to keep the lead intact.
Edwin Encarnacion scored a single on an error in the seventh inning to edge up the lead to 8-4 followed by a 2-hit one run 8th inning of Alfredo Aceves. Rajai Davis drove in single to take the lead to 9-4. Jarrod Saltalamacchia drove in a double
and J.D. Drew scored a single in the eighth for the Red Sox.
Frank Francisco threw a scoreless 9th to win the first encounter of three-game series by 9-7 for the Toronto Blue Jays.
