Toronto Blue Jays defeat Cleveland Indians 11-7 – MLB Update
The Toronto Blue Jays put in a tremendous effort as they routed the Cleveland Indians 11-7 at Progressive Field on Friday, July 8.
Largely shaken by the previous defeat, the Blue Jays put up a good team effort to secure the win. Equally frustrating was the game result for the Indians who were looking to continue their winning streak.
For the Indians everything went wrong as Mitch Talbot’s unimpressive innings in which he allowed five runs. "He really put us behind the 8-ball," Acta said. "The offense showed some life, but unfortunately it was too big a hole to dig out of it."
Travis Snider provided a favourable start to the Blue Jays’ offence with his first hit of the inning, driving in a two-run homer followed by Rajai Davis who singled to left-centre to give an early 3-0 lead to the Blue Jays.
However, the Indians bounced back with Jack Hannahan and Michael Brantley’s respective singles that enlivened the Indians’ defence. Nonetheless, hardly did Jo-Jo Reyes settle that the Blue Jays recharged their bats.
Davis drove in his second run of the game and Yunel Escobar doubled to deep right on a vulnerable pitch of Talbot, effectively unnerving the Indians’ pitcher. His pitching spell did indeed disappoint his team and led to the strengthening of the Blue Jays’
grip on the game.
Talbot was once again subjected to three big hits in the sixth inning that caused trouble for the Indians. Snider hit a two-run homer and Eric Thames scored a single to pile up the lead to 8-2, giving a clear indication that the Blue Jays were heading to
victory.
Travis Hafner scored after an error by first baseman Adam Lind that gave the Indians a run in the 2-hit sixth inning off Reyes. Establishing the lead, the Blue Jays changed the pitching order, bringing Octavio Dotel from the bull-pen.
Dotel pitched a scoreless inning, followed by Davis’ single in the eighth for the Blue Jays, having an 8-3 lead for the team. However, Shawn Camp could not stop the Indians charged hitters in the eighth.
Snider hit another two-run homer to score his fifth and team’s 11th run in the game to be in a decisive position.
"The thing we've seen time and time again this season is when we've had some adversity the day before we've put it behind us," Toronto manager John Farrell said. "We continue to battle and compete."
Jon Rauch pitched a good ninth inning, only allowing a run to Brantley. However, Rauch sent other hitters packing to secure an 11-7 lead for the Blue Jays one night after losing by 5-4 to the Indians.
