Toronto Blue Jays defeat Cleveland Indians 7-1 – MLB Update
The Toronto Blue Jays had a walk in the park at the Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio as they defeated the Cleveland Indians 7-1 on Sunday, July 10.
The Blue Jays are now on a three-game winning streak heading into the All-Star break and are inching closer to the .500 winning percentage with 45-47 for the season.
Toronto almost sealed the game in the third-inning hitting extravaganza in which they bagged five precious runs.
Designated hitter Eric Thames got things started for Toronto with his fourth home-run of the season. His 394-feet homer was enough to ignite the bull-pen. Yunel Escobar followed Thames as he added the second run in quick succession.
The American League All-Star hero Jose Bautista once again displayed his skill with two RBIs and one run. Bautista added the third run for the Blue Jays, followed by Corey Patterson’s double, allowing Travis Snider and J.P. Arencibia to add a run each and
complete five in the third inning.
The sixth inning witnessed two more runs being added by the Blue Jays once again helped by Bautista’s double. Thames added his second run for the game and Rajai Davis chipped in with a run to take the score to 7-0 at the top of the sixth inning.
With just three innings to play and a seven-run deficit to avoid, the game was virtually over for the Indians. Grady Sizemore scored one at the bottom of the sixth inning and that was pretty much the scoring for the Indians. Apart from this, all batters
surrendered to some top quality pitching by the Blue Jays.
Brett Cecil finally enjoyed some success with the Blue Jays as he won his second game of the season after conceding four losses already. He pitched in six innings for just six hits and one run. Cecil managed six strike-outs in a fine display of aggressive
pitching.
Luis Perez and Jason Fraser carried on the good work initiated by Cecil and saw off things safely without conceding any run.
Carlos Carrasco could not reciprocate Cecil’s effort for the Cleveland Indians and the expensive third inning cost him his sixth loss for the season. He was wayward at the mound and failed to alter his length even when the batters unglued him. He was swiftly
replaced by Frank Herrmann who halted the scoring for two innings. Rafael Perez then came on in the sixth inning only to concede two more runs and gift the game to the Blue Jays.
The win enabled Toronto to win the four-game series 3-1. More importantly for them, they won the three games consecutively and are now on a streak with a good chance to extend it after the All-Star break.
Cleveland, after three losses, still has a decent 47-42 record and has a nice chance to regroup during the break.
