Toronto Blue Jays defeat Seattle Mariners 11-6 – MLB Update
The Toronto Blue Jays overpowered the Seattle Mariners 11-6 in the second straight game of the three-game series at Rogers Centre in Toronto on Wednesday, July 20.
The Blue Jays batting line-up played an important role in the domination of the Mariners, as they blistered 11 runs in opposition of the Mariners’ six to snatch their 49th win of the season.
Travis Snider bunted in a single on a sacrifice fly off the Mariners’ starter Jason Vargas in order to start the game 1-0. Yunel Escobar carried the game into 2-0 with his RBI single and Eric Thames scored an RBI double to take it to 4-0 in the bottom of
the second inning.
Travis Snider added his second RBI single of the game in the bottom of the third inning. After Josh Bard of Mariners scored an RBI double in the top of the first inning, Travis launched dazzling 396-feet long home-run in the bottom of the fourth inning to
finalise an 8-2 lead.
"We're starting to swing the bats a little better the last couple of nights but we're getting sloppy in other areas," manager Eric Wedge said. "That just can't happen."
In the sixth inning, Edwin Encarnacion contributed with a long grand slam to centre-field, as John McDonald drove in a single to score for the tenth run of the game. The Mariners were trailing 10-2 and Dustin Ackley added an RBI single to reduce one run
but the Blue Jays’ Adam Lind added a homer to confirm the Blue Jays another win.
Adam Kennedy and Dustin Ackley touched homers in the eighth and ninth inning respectively but their runs could not take the Mariners more than six runs. This loss sent Seattle into 54th loss of the season.
"Somebody's got to step up and do something about it because I know we're not satisfied with this, I know Eric's not satisfied with this, the staff, GM Jack Zduriencik, everybody.” Shortstop Brendan Ryan said. “This is not OK, and nobody thinks that."
Their starter Jason Vargas failed to counter his rival Brandon Morrow. Vargas allowed five runs on six hits, walked five and did not make any strike-out over only three innings while Morrow struck-out seven batters, allowing three runs on seven hits over
seven innings to get his seventh win of the season.
It was not a game for the pitchers, as the Mariners’ Jamey Wright, and Aaron Laffey each allowed three runs. Wright tossed one inning while Laffey tossed three innings. The Blue Jays’ reliever Frank Francisco and Octavio Dotel also allowed runs. Frank went
for one run while Dotel yielded two runs over one inning.
