Toronto Blue Jays defeat Seattle Mariners 5-1 – MLB Update
The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Seattle Mariners by 5-1 on Wednesday, August 17 at Safeco Field, Seattle.
Brandon Morrow was the solo star of the night with his over six innings in which he merely gave up three hits and allowed a run to give his team a victory.
Interestingly, it was two years ago that the Seattle Mariners had traded Morrow to the Toronto Blue Jays. Having been part of the Mariners, Morrow knew exactly how he had to keep his former team at bay in the series last game.
"The way Brandon came through from the first pitch, he was extremely powerful," Jays’ manager John Farrell said. "He had his full assortment of pitches. Just an explosive fastball. To think where he's come from in two year's time."
"I've changed a lot in two years, not my pitching style necessarily," Morrow said, "but my ability to do what I want with the ball has improved."
However, an unfortunate incident happened, which should and could have been avoided. Throwing a pitch at 97 mph, Morrow hit Casper Wells in the face that resulted in blood oozing out of his nose. Fortunately, he did not suffer any threatening injury.
After the first inning went scoreless as Brandon Morrow and Blake Beavan tossed some good pitches in the first half. Nonetheless, Edwin Encarnacion homered in the second to score the first run for the Toronto Blue Jays, making a solid start for the team.
While Brandon Morrow was unleashing his fastballs with different variation, disallowing the Seattle Mariners’ hitters to score, the Jays’ offence remained active. The third inning brought the biggest hit of the night.
Adam Lind’s hit resulted in three-run homer that gave the Toronto Blue Jays complete dominance in the game given the wonderfully solid performance of Morrow. The starter capitalised on the gain the team offence made and kept the lead intact to 4-0. He managed
to restrict the Mariners from scoring.
Colby Rasmus then hit another homer in the fourth, piling up the lead to 5-0 at a time when the Seattle Mariners’ offence seemed out of colour. Entering into sixth, Franklin Gutierrez scored the first run for the Seattle Mariners, which was too little too
late.
As the relievers threw their strong innings, Frank Francisco came as a closer and tossed a shut-out ninth to finish the game with a 5-1 victory for the Toronto Blue Jays. The win also gave the Jays a 2-1 win in the three-game series.
The Blue put in a brilliant effort as they managed to defeat the struggling Mariners. Seattle will be looking to improve their performance for their next match-up.
