Toronto Blue Jays defeat Seattle Mariners 6-5 in fourteen innings game – MLB Update
The Toronto Blue Jays snatched a fourteen innings long electrifying contest against the Seattle Mariners 6-5, in the first match of the three-game home series at Rogers Centre in Toronto on Tuesday July 19.
After the Mariners made good start and took a 5-2 early lead in the top of the second inning, the Blue Jays’ struggled hard to bounce back in the game. They restricted the Mariners’ bat and strived to swing their own and after a series of attempts, the Blue
Jays’ finally managed to touch three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie it five-all.
As soon as the game entered into eighth inning, pitchers from both sides expressed a dominant game to restrict the batters. The Mariners’ Jeff Gray pitched two innings while David Pauley tossed three scoreless innings, allowing only four hits combined. On
the other hand, the Blue Jays’ Shawn Camp, Jon Rauch, Jason Frasor Octavio Dotel and Marc Rzepczynski remained scoreless to force the game into the 14th inning.
The Blue Jays’ closer Casey Janssen started the 14th inning and managed to escape without allowing any run and striking out two batters. The Mariners’ closer Jamey Wright, who was resuming his spell from the 13th inning, allowed a game-ending
single to the Blue Jays’ short-stop John McDonald. He had entered the game for his first at-bat and utilised nine pitches to generate the game winning run.
The Mariners’ Brendan Ryan, who touched a one-run homer in the second inning, was frustrated of the overall performance by the bull-pen.
"It's definitely frustrating," Ryan said. "We come out of the gates the right way: hungry. Then I do not know, we just kind of fell asleep a bit there. They were making some plays but I think they were hungrier throughout the game."
Admitting the mistakes of his players, the Mariners’ manager Eric Wedge said. "We made some mistakes on the base paths that really hurt us."
The Blue Jays’ Adam Lind launched two-run homer in the first while Yunel Escobar, Eric Thames and Jose Bautista each contributed an RBI single in the seventh inning.
The Blue Jays’ starter Brett Cecil scattered five runs on nine hits and walked one batter on seven innings. The Mariners’ starter Michael Pineda consumed same amount of runs on seven hits, but he took out six batters in just over six innings.
