Toronto Blue Jays edge past Boston Red Sox, 7-6 – MLB News
A group effort from the batters and pitchers of the Toronto Blue Jays resulted in their club’s 7-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox, on May 10, at Rogers Centre, in Toronto.
Blue Jays took a 3-0 lead from the beginning. Edwin Encarnacion walked on the loaded bases, while Juan Rivera and Aaron Hill both hit an RBI single in the first inning. With this contribution, the Jays added three runs. Red Sox opened their scoring account
in the second inning, when Carl Crawford took an RBI single to lessen their trail to 3-1. The third inning passed away without any score from both sides.
David Ortiz hit a one-run homer in the fourth inning to cut-off their deficit to 3-2. It was the fifth home run for Ortiz during this season. Adrian Gonzalez opened the fifth inning strongly as he struck a two-run homer towards the left-field position. Jays’
batters bounced back with a game-winning passion and Jose Bautista hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to tie the game at 4-4.
Red Sox’ Manager, Terry Francona, was pleased with the way Gonzalez batted throughout the game. Francona said of Gonzalez, “We're seeing what everybody has talked about. When he leverages the ball to left field, he looks like a right-handed hitter.”
Yunel Escobar was injured during the sixth inning when he was struck with a hard ball on his left ankle. David Cooper joined the roster in place of Escobar. Cooper, while speaking on his performance, said, “Once I saw [Davis] get those two bags I was like,
just get something to the outfield and let's win this game.”
The Blue Jays went ahead with 5-4 in the sixth inning, when J.P. Arencibia scored a single run towards the left-field area.
During the eighth inning, Jed Lowrie doubled while Jose Iglesias scored a single run on the grounder of Crawford, but the Blue Jays again got a 6-5 lead in the eighth inning when Cooper struck a solo homer against the Red Sox’ reliever, Daniel Bard. The
game was tied again in the ninth inning at 6-all, when Jarrod Saltalamacchia took an RBI single and Gonzalez hit his second homer of the game, off the right-centre field.
An additional inning was given to both sides for the tie-breaking run and Jays took full benefit of it, when Cooper drove a winning run on the sacrifice fly of J.D. Drew, to edge past his team with 7-6. The Jays starter, Kyle Drabek was economical as he
permitted four runs on eight hits with four earned runs in his five inning pitches. He walked three and struck out five batters.
Jon Lester was expensive as he allowed five runs on seven hits in 5 1/2 inning pitches.
