Toronto Blue Jays edge past the Minnesota Twins 6-5 – MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays edged past the Minnesota Twins 6-5 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario on Monday, October 1 in the opening game of their three match series.
Blue Jays will be very pleased with the way they handled some difficult situations in a game that was played on an extremely fighting note. John Farrell and company may be out of the playoffs race, they would be certainly looking to end the season on a bright
note to build on some much needed confidence.
It will be interesting to see if they can continue their good work in the next two games to complete a series sweep against their American League rivals.
"You can't throw the ball home there; we've got to try and turn two," Gardenhire said in an interview. "We didn't; we went the other way. Trevor stated there was speed at home plate and he didn't think we could do it, but we have to turn two there. That's
a double play ball. That's a big play."
Starting pitcher Aaron Laffey played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash as he gave up just eight hits and four runs in five innings to keep Twins on the defensive. Closer Brandon Lyon grabbed his fourth win of the season after he allowed just
one hit in the scoreless ninth.
"This is the third time I've got beat on that pitch this year so I think I've got to re-evaluate throwing it there," said Twins’ pitcher Glen Perkins. "That's the third home run hit on a fastball down there. I've got to think about that this winter."
Adam Lind put Blue Jays on the board with an RBI single to right in the first inning. Jeff Mathis added a double to left and Lind doubled to left in the seventh inning to keep Toronto in the contest.
First baseman Yan Gomes homered to left centre in the ninth inning to level the score 5-5 and take the match into the extra inning.
Right Fielder Anthony Gose delivered the tie breaking single in the tenth inning to help his side secure a memorable victory.
