Toronto Blue Jays fall to Boston Red Sox 5-8 – MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays fell to the Boston Red Sox 5-8 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario on Friday, September 14 in the opening game of their three match series.
John Farrell and his men looked completely out of sorts as they failed to put up enough runs on the board. The pitching rotation also struggled to execute the game plan, allowing Red Sox to score runs at regular intervals.
Moises Sierra scored on a wild pitch by Daisuke Matsuzaka in the third inning to break the deadlock and put Blue Jays on the board. Adam Lind also made his presence felt with an RBI groundout to second to double Blue Jays lead 2-0.
Yunel Escobar singled to shallow left and third baseman Brett Lawrie added double to left in the eighth to level the score. For the Red Sox, Ryan Lavarnway hit a three run home-run in the fourth and Mauro Gomez delivered the tie breaking single in the bottom
of the ninth.
"Mauro is a pretty good hitter," Valentine said. "He's been playing a lot against left-handers, but I left him in against a right-hander there and he didn't try to do too much. He took a slider into right-center field that I thought was caught for a second."
"It was a real waste that I gave up a few runs without giving up any hits," Red Sox’s starter Matsuzaka said. "It was really unfortunate that I wasn't able to make a small adjustment during that inning and get out of it quicker."
Starting pitcher Aaron Laffey paid the ultimate price for his errors on the mound as he gave up four hits and three runs in just over three innings. His poor outing damaged his ERA to 4.55. It will be interesting to see if Laffey can learn from his mistakes
to post better numbers in the next season.
Relief pitcher Darren Oliver took his third loss of the season after he gave up the tie breaking single in the ninth. Closer Casey Janssen was also hit hard, allowing two hits and two runs in just one inning of relief.
The Blue Jays will be disappointed with their performance against the powerful Red Sox. The team will be looking to dominate in the next game of the series.
