Toronto Blue Jays floor red hot Baltimore Orioles 6-2 – MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays floored red hot Baltimore Orioles 6-2 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario on Monday, May 28 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Cody Rasmus provided the Blue Jays with a perfect start as he singled to shallow right to put his team 1-0 ahead. Credit must also be given to Kelly Johnson for his masterful performance.
Johnson grounded out to second in the second inning to extend Blue Jays’ lead to 2-0 and later homered to centre to give the Blue Jays complete control of the situation. Edwin Encarnacion also joined the party with a home run to left centre.
"DeMarlo didn't think (Davis) went far enough out of the line," Showalter said. "(The tag) obviously missed him."
"He made his call," Chris Davis said. "It hurt us right there. That's a big inning that could have been."
For the Orioles, Wilson Betemit had an RBI single and Mark Reynolds doubled to deep centre in the ninth but Toronto held on to their lead to secure an emphatic victory.
Starting pitcher Drew Hutchison allowed just three hits in the longest start of his big league career.
"It's tough to put big innings together when a guy is living away or living in and hitting his spots," said Reynolds.
"I found my slot, found my release point, which is something I was looking for," Hutchison said. "I had inconsistently found it and I was able to find it consistently."
Orioles entered the series with a mighty 29-20 record and of course, they were the favourites to win the opening game. However, the Blue Jays surprised their opponents with their high quality game play.
Blue Jays were brushed aside by Texas Rangers in their previous three game series and it was extremely crucial for Manager John Farrell to put things back on the right track for his team.
Buck Showalter and company, on the other hand, will be disappointed to lose the opening game but considering the strength of their hitting and pitching lineups, they are expected to bounce back strongly in the next game.
