Toronto Blue Jays hammer Seattle Mariners 7-2 – MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays hammered Seattle Mariners 7-2 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario on Sunday, April 29 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Mariners had the first laugh during the contest as Chone Figgins homered to right to put his team 1-0 ahead in the first inning. Both teams failed to score in the next three innings. Kelly Johnson broke the deadlock in the fifth and Colby Rasmus scored the first run for the Blue Jays.
Edwin Encarnacion hit his third home run in as many games and starting pitcher Handerson Alvarez won his first start after almost eight months to put Toronto in commanding position.
"We didn't play very well all day," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "I didn't feel like we were giving away at-bats, but the end result of at-bats wasn't very good."
"We got the runners on, we just couldn't push them across," Figgins said. "We had some good hacks at him but he started changing speeds, started taking something off his fastball. I think he saw that we were seeing his pitches and started taking a lot off his fastball."
Brett Lawrie, Rajai Davis, Charlie Furbush and Jose Bautista also made valuable contributions for Toronto.
With their win over the Mariners on Sunday evening, the Blue Jays improved their win-loss record to 12-10. Credit must be given to John Farrell and his players for the way they bounced back. Seattle secured a comfortable 9-5 win in the opening game and considering the way they brushed aside Detroit Tigers, they were the favourites to win the series.
However, Toronto showed great determination, team work, fighting spirit and mental toughness in second game to level the series at 1-1. With winning momentum on their side, the Blue Jays looked unstoppable in the final game.
It will be interesting to see if the players can put up similar performances throughout the season to give Blue Jays a chance to win their first World Series title since 1993, of course that will be huge surprise for every MLB follower.
