Toronto Blue Jays humiliate Boston Red Sox 7-3 – MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays showed great character and composure as they outclassed the Boston Red Sox 7-3 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Saturday, July 21 in second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia provided his team with a perfect start as he homered to right and Adrian Gonzalez and Cody Ross scored to put the Red Sox 3-0 ahead in the second inning.
With home conditions working in their favour, Bobby Valentine and company were determined to take the lead beyond their opponent’s reach but the Blue Jays had other ideas.
Brett Lawrie hit a sacrifice fly to right in the third and Edwin Encarnacion homered to left in the sixth to bring Toronto right back into the contest, levelling the score 3-3.
J.P. Arencibia played a match winning role as he added a solo home-run to left-centre in the seventh and Lawrie drove in a crucial run to extend Blue Jays’ lead to 6-3. Colby Rasmus grounded into fielder’s choice to wrap up an impressive Blue Jays’ victory.
Starting pitcher Carlos Villanueva grabbed his fifth win of the season, overcoming a shaky start. Overall, he gave up three runs, four hits with five strike-outs.
"It was a combination of us coming to life and his sinker staying up a little," said Toronto manager John Farrell, whose team had just two hits heading into the sixth. "Cook was that good in the first five innings."
"After the three-run homer, he stabilized the game," Farrell said of Villanueva. "We weren't getting much done on Cook."
"It was kind of a test -- keeping the game within reach," Villanueva said. "Our guys came through, J.P. and Eddie, in a big way."
After crushing the Red Sox 6-1 in the series opener, the Blue Jays continued to play aggressively on Saturday evening to earn a confident victory. With their second straight win at Fenway Park, John Farrell and company improved their record to 47-47 and
it will be interesting to see if they can carry over the momentum into the finale to secure a rare series sweep in Massachusetts.
