Toronto Blue Jays humiliated by Tampa Bay Rays 4-9 – MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays were humiliated by the Tampa Bay Rays 4-9 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario on Sunday, September 2 in the finale of their four match series.
Starting pitcher Ricky Romero paid the ultimate price for his errors on the mound as he gave up eight hits and seven runs in just an inning to take his 13th loss of the season. Relief pitchers Chad Jenkins and Aaron Laffey combined to pitch eight
solid innings for Toronto but the Rays held on to their lead comfortably to complete a deserving victory.
"Going through something like this, I would never wish upon anyone," Romero said. "It's tough. I've had advice from a lot of people, even from opponents, the guy who pitched against me today and their all-star third baseman, a lot of guys on other teams.”
"(They say) `keep going, keep moving forward, you can't dwell on the past. It's going to turn around."
"This is going to be a race to the end," outfielder B.J. Upton said. "We still got our work cut out for us but I think we're in a good position."
After beating their American League East Division rivals in first two games of the series, the Blue Jays had an excellent opportunity to build on some much needed confidence but the Rays regrouped themselves and fought back superbly in last two games to
split the four match series.
The offence in particular, displayed some top quality hitting skills to help Rays establish complete control over the contest. Evan Longoria made the most of the scoring chances early on to put Rays on the board.
Ben Francisco kept Toronto on the defensive with a solo home-run to left in the second inning. Jose Molina singled to shallow centre, Desmond Jennings singled to centre and Jeff Keppinger grounded out to third to give Rays an impassable 7-0 lead in the second
inning.
For the Blue Jays, Edwin Encarnacion hit a sacrifice fly to first and Adam Lind reached on an infield single to pitch in the seventh. Encarnacion also homered to left in the bottom of the ninth but his effort was never going to be enough.
