Toronto Blue Jays lose 2-7 against Los Angeles Angels – MLB Update
The Toronto Blue Jays lost another outing against the Los Angeles Angels with a 2-7 score in the third outing of the four-game series at Rogers Centre in Toronto on Wednesday, September 21 to provide the Angels some relief in the wild-card race.
Blue Jays had a poor outing facing the Angels’ starter Dan Haren. The pitcher made them struggle in his entire eight innings. Short-stop McCoy, left-fielder Eric Thames, right-fielder and the home-run leader of the MLB, Jose Bautista each failed in their
four at-bats. Only Thames could score one run over 18 pitches he faced.
Toronto’s top prospects, Edwin Encarnacion and J.P. Arencibia were also on the back foot against the gruesome Haren, who gave only four hits over 114 pitches. In combined 32 at-bats, the nine batters touched only six hits and two of these were off the bat
of Kelly Johnson, who appeared in three at-bats.
Blue Jays’ ball could not provide any considerable performances in the bottom half of the outing. Starter Dustin McGowan was tagged for five hits, two runs and two RBIs over five innings. Despite making eight strike-outs, McGowen lost his first outing of
the season.
Relief pitcher Jesse Litsch did not back his starter and allowed two runs over three hits and then later in the game, Casey Janssen gave away a homer to Vernon Wells.
Angels’ batting was in line with the ball to get their 85th win to tie the Tampa Bay Rays in the wild-card race. Maicer Izturis earned two RBIs, Peter Bourjos launched a homer and Vernon Wells earned four RBIs in back-to-back games.
"Anything you can do to help this team win is good," Wells said. "But yeah, obviously it feels good doing it here."
Haren received a fast liner of Eric Thames on the wrist of his non-throwing left arm. Haren walked off but the pain turned his direction directly towards the tunnel to reach the clubhouse.
"When I first got hit there was a pretty good deal of pain," Haren said. "The initial reaction is you're just scared of breaking something, or something bad. After a few seconds the feeling came back into my hand and I could feel it was going to be all right.
It definitely hurt though."
His X-rays showed a negative result and is likely to appear back for his next outing. Haren struck-out four batters to earn his 16th win of the season.
The Angels now have to win one more to beat Tampa Bay, who are currently receiving a beating from the New York Yankees.
