Toronto Blue Jays lose to Detroit Tigers 2-3 – MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays were beaten by the Detroit Tigers 2-3 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Thursday, August 23 in the finale of their three match series.
Manager John Farrell looked disgusted at the end of the game. Blue Jays once again failed to handle the pressure, allowing the Tigers to dictate terms in a low a scoring thriller. Similar pattern of play was observed in Game 2 as well when Farrell and company
struggled to get over the finish line.
Edwin Encarnacion continued to impress the skipper as he hit a towering two run home-run in the fourth inning to break the deadlock and put his side on the board. However, apart from Encarnacion, none of Toronto’s hitters could take advantage of available
scoring opportunities.
Tigers, on the other hand, were determined as always. Brennan Boesch turned things around with an RBI single to centre in the eighth inning and Austin Jackson levelled the score 2-2 to force the game into an extra inning.
"He's made some great ones since he's been here. That's one of the best ones I've ever seen him make," Leyland said of Jackson. "I thought there was no chance. ... I said, 'Oh, my God, that's in the gap.' All of a sudden, out of nowhere came Austin. To me,
that's one of the best catches he's made, probably because of the situation."
"He made a great play," Anthony Gose said of speedy Jackson. "I didn't think he was anywhere near it and he came out of nowhere."
Leyland and his men continued the good work in the 11th inning and Alex Avila drove in the winning run to help the Tigers secure a rare series sweep against the Blue Jays.
Detroit’ starting pitcher Justin Verlander played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash as he pitched his first complete game of the season. Allowing just four hits and two runs, he made quick work of Toronto’s batting line-up.
His counterpart from the Blue Jays, J.A. Happ pitched seven plus solid innings, allowing just one run on four hits. Happ was unfortunate to end up on the losing side.
