Toronto Blue Jays’ manager John Farrell and Boston catcher Jason Varitek praise Ricky Romero
Ricky Romero was the star of the show on Thursday night when the Toronto Blue Jays took on the Boston Red Sox at Rogers Centre, Toronto. The game, which was played on September 8, generated a plethora of praise for the Blue Jays’ starter, Romero. The home
side thwarted the Red Sox 7-4, winning the series in dominating fashion.
The pitcher has been enjoying a terrific time on the mound and he did one of the things he was itching to do for a long time: throw effectively against the Boston club. Romero took three runs from five hits in just over six innings of pitching but his resilience
paid off as the Red Sox failed to contain the Blue Jays’ hitting line up, on the other end.
Toronto Blue Jays’ manager John Farrell noted the improvement in his starter, who moved to his 14th win of the season with an ERA of 3.01.
"I think the one thing it proves to Ricky is that he learned from his past experiences," Blue Jays’ manager John Farrell said. "He made some adjustments, went out and executed, and it proved to be a successful formula."
Boston’s captain and catcher, Jason Varitek, was also full of praise for the young pitcher. The veteran catcher scored two runs in the game, including a homer in the ninth inning off Toronto reliever Frank Francisco.
"He's got that good split-change," Varitek said. "He was strike one at different times. When you're battling from a 4-0 lead, you have to try to make him throw strikes. He had that ability. Really those two pitches were big for him today - that fastball
and the split-change."
Romero played his match well as he allowed three balls and struck-out seven hitters during his feature on the mound. One of the interesting facts to consider here will be that the starter entered the bout 2-8 against the Red Sox. His ERA against the club
was 8.08. That was highest for any team in the American League against the hurler. Today was truly Romero’s day.
