Toronto Blue Jays officially sign Melky Cabrera – MLB Update
Some say that Blue Jays are going in right direction. After taking a bold step to trade their future potential players to Miami Marlins, the Blue Jays have signed Melky Cabrera to a two-year deal.
The Blue Jays management made it official on Monday that they have signed the former San Francisco Giants ace with a two-year deal. Blue Jays will be paying Cabrera a hefty $16 million.
Earlier it was revealed in the media that the Blue Jays are going to sign Cabrera after both side agreed on a mutual understanding.
Free agent Cabrera had a tough season this year. Despite earning All-Star Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, he was banned for 50-games using Performance Enhancing Drugs (PED).
“Our top guys liked him a lot. Mind you, we had dissenting voices in the room, too, He’s a guy with a chance to rebound. You figure he’s going to be clean because he’s going to be tested more often than a normal guy. The Jays are taking some risk, but it’s a low gamble,” said one executive.
Said another executive for Cabrera in the past, “When we discussed him, we thought that he was no longer the guy he was in Atlanta. He didn’t come into camp in shape and was buried, And he’s not the same young kid he was when he broke in with the Yankees at 21.”
Cabrera finished this past Major League Baseball season with .346 hitting average along with 11 homers, 60 RBIs and .390 OBP.
On the other hand, his career .284 consistent hitting averages along with 69 home-runs, 417 RBI and .338 OBP also makes a good player in the league.
His seven-year Major League Baseball career has made him a strong player. He started his career in 2005 with the New York Yankees. Later he went onto play for the Atlanta Braves and Kansas City Royals.
As he joined the San Francisco Giants in 2012, many believed that he will be staying in the Giants for a while now but as soon as his involvement in PED came out in the media, the Giants decided not to give him another chance.
