Toronto Blue Jays outclassed by New York Yankees 2-4 – MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays were beaten by the New York Yankees 2-4 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Wednesday, September 19 in the opening game of their three match series.
Yankees used their home conditions to great effect to secure a much needed win on Wednesday evening. With their win, they also snatched the Number one spot on the American League East Division standings table.
Starting pitcher Andy Pettitte produced a magical performance for New York, giving up just four hits in five effective innings to grab his fourth win of the season. Pettitte is an extremely experienced campaigner.
His ability to deliver under pressure is what makes him an asset for the Yankees. It will be interesting to see if he can continue his excellent form over the next few weeks to help his side lift the World Series trophy.
For the Blue Jays, starter Henderson Alvarez pitched seven sharp innings, allowing five hits and three runs while striking-out seven batters. However, despite posing impressive numbers, Henderson ended up taking his 13th loss of the season. Darren
Oliver was also unable to stop the flow of runs as he gave up two hits and one run in one inning of relief.
"I think when you get a hit to tie one of the best hitters in baseball, it's an amazing feeling. I mean, this guy has been a legend in the game for a long time and, to mention my name right next to his just makes me feel so little," Omar Vizquel said. "I
never thought, never, ever, in my career of baseball that's been a long one, that I was gonna come close, to even compare my hits with the Babe. It's just unbelievable. It's very emotional, especially here in New York, the house that he built."
Robinson Cano, Alex Rodriguez and Curtis Granderson made the most of available opportunities early on to give Yankees a vital 3-0 lead. Kelly Johnson singled to left and Omar Vizquel added a doubled to right in the eighth inning to keep Blue Jays in the
contest but New York was too hot to handle. Nick Swisher singled to left in the eighth to help his side wrap up a superb victory.
