Toronto Blue Jays outclassed by Oakland Athletics 1-4 – MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays were defeated by the inform Oakland Athletics 1-4 at O.co Coliseum in Oakland, California on Thursday, August 2 in the opening game of their four match series.
Starting pitcher Henderson Alvarez was outpitched by his counterpart from Oakland as he took his eighth loss of the season. In a low scoring game, the Blue Jays needed Henderson to step up and take on the responsibility but that did not turn out to be the
case.
The 22-year-old right hander gave up four hits and three runs in five wavered innings. Starter J.A. Happ also had a testing time on the mound as he allowed three hits and a run in two innings.
A’s starter Bartolo Colon, on the other hand, grabbed his eighth win of the season after giving up just seven hits in eight solid innings, lowering his ERA to just 3.55.
"We're in a stretch where runs are at a premium," Toronto manager John Farrell said with worried facial expressions. "It's difficult to string hits together right now. You have to credit Colon. He stayed out of the middle of the plate."
"(Colon) has done great all year and we haven't gotten him the run support that he deserves, so for me to be able to do that was huge," said Reddick in a post game interview. "I went home last night and had a long talk with (my) dad, and it seemed to work
out."
Manager John Farrell will be extremely disappointed to see his team going down like nine pins on Thursday. Oakland used their home conditions superbly to dent Blue Jays’ confidence levels. After the taking the loss against the A’s, Toronto has now moved
three games behind the .500 win percentage mark.
Right now, Farrell and company are sitting at the bottom of the American League East Division standings, ten games behind the leaders New York Yankees. However, it will be not wrong to say that they still have a slim chance of making it throughout to the
playoffs. The Blue Jays must regroup and fight back to give their fans something to cheer about.
