Toronto Blue Jays re-sign Brian Jeroloman – MLB News
While most of the Major League Baseball clubs are settling to acquire new faces to create some diversity in the club, the Toronto Blue Jays are moving towards another side. The American League Eastern franchise has re-signed their catcher Brian Jeroloman
from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Pittsburgh Pirates called the player off waiver on November 18 but was announced on November 23. Pirates were hoping to acquire a promising catcher, but the Blue Jays did not allow him to stay on waiver more than five days and got him back in their roster.
Acquiring him back, Toronto now has 39 players on their active roster list. The club now will have to create some room to complete the roster.
According to sources, the Blue Jays have an option to set some players off waivers, a move which will provide the club a chance to hire some free agents. The move will help Jeroloman, who has been the part of the Blue Jays since 2006 when the club acquired
him as a draftee in the sixth round. Jeroloman also has big league experience with the Blue Jays, as he was called to MLB on August 23. Although he has not entered into any Major League game since, but a sense of association has created confidence in the right
hand switch hitter.
The 26-year-old catcher spent most of the season with Triple-A Las Vegas where he managed his average to .240, launched two home-runs and 26 RBIs in 79 games. Jeroloman now has become the most recent example of the Phantom Player, the one who remains in
a 40-man roster but does not participate in any game.
As the Blue Jays still need a player to complete their 40-man roster, the club will not be eligible to acquire Jeroloman until they free one of their players. It has been reported that the Blue Jays might set catcher Joe Molina free via free agency to open
a spot. The Blue Jays have more concerns about their pitching rotation than the batting, as the club has few star batters in the camp.
Every team is on the move to hire a few top players in their roster to create some depth and consistency in their line-ups before the start of the 2012 MLB regular season.
