Toronto Blue Jays rout Boston Red Sox, 9-3 - MLB Updates
Toronto Blue Jays romped to a 9-3 victory in second outing against the Boston Red Sox, at the Rogers Centre on Wednesday night, May 11, to grab the two-game series, 2-0.
Boston’s third baseman, Kevin Youkilis, hit a runs-batted-in (RBI) single to the left-side of the field-off Toronto’ starter, Jesse Litsch, in the first inning to provide a 1-0 lead. Toronto could not produce any positive result and remained score-less until
the sixth inning.
On the other hand, Boston’s Corey Patterson, hit a led off run and then Aaron Hill touched an RBI single, to lead the Club 2-1 in the third inning. Boston then kept going and added two more runs in the next inning.
John McDonald launched a small 353-feet one-run homer, his second in 2011, off Boston’ starter, John Lackey, to score the third run for Toronto. Yunel Escobar hit a sacrifice fly to the centre of the field, scoring Rajai Davis for fourth run to take a 4-1
lead.
In the sixth inning, Boston’s Adrian Gonzalez hammered a 372-feet long one-run homer-off Litsch, to help the team trim the lead by one run. David Ortiz followed Gonzalez’s streamline and smashed another one-run homer, cutting the lead to 3-4.
Boston’ hopes washed away when David Cooper led off the four-run seventh inning, with an RBI single. John McDonald followed Cooper and touched an RBI double, completely vanquishing the Boston’s hopes. Davis added another RBI to take the lead to 9-3 to seal
the game for Toronto.
Toronto manager, John Farrell, was pleased to see Davis in such a good momentum and said, “It's just good to see him with the confidence he has currently, the way he's swinging the bat. He's hitting fastballs and breaking balls alike.”
Litsch despite giving three runs on six hits including two homers and one walk, managed to earn his fourth win of the season. Litsch also made four strike-outs to move his record to 4-2, with a 4.14 ERA. Litsch had strong back-up from relievers, Casey Janssen,
Jon Rauch and closer Frank Francisco, who remained score-less over their short spells. Only Janssen out of these pitchers, gave one hit, however, he also made two strike-outs.
Lackey, on the other side, had a nightmare outing, yielding nine runs on nine hits and allowing five walks, while he made just one strike-out over six and 2/3 innings. Lackey lost his fifth game of the season with a 8.01 ERA.
Lackey was not happy and said, “Everything went wrong that could go wrong. Pretty much the story of the whole d**n year.”
Boston manager, Terry Francona while speaking of Lackey’s performance, said, “He didn't really have the put away breaking ball. He left it over the middle a few times.”
Closer, Tim Wakefield, allowed three score-less hits and struck out three batters over one and 1/3 innings, but remained winless against Boston.
