Toronto Blue Jays shine in 11-2 victory against Houston Astros at Spring Training - MLB Update
Eric Thames and Rajai Davis deliver a terrific performance as they help Toronto Blue Jays beat Houston Astros 11-2 in their Grapefruit League Spring Training game at Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee, Florida on March 9, 2012.
Blue Jays took a two run lead from the very beginning and while not receiving any resistance from Astros they made addition of three more runs in fourth to take their lead to five, only to substantiate it further in the sixth with five more runs in one inning
alone.
Brett Lawrie continuing his splendid Spring Training performances went through another great day. While every-inch a part of rendering Astros a thoroughly humiliating defeat, he grabbed two RBIs and scored one run while hitting once on two at-bats he faced.
"He's got very good instincts inside the game," Toronto manager John Farrell said. "He's a confident player and he makes very good decisions."
J.A. Happ, Astros’ starter, was taken on as soon as he appeared on the mound and in just over two innings he pitched he was thrashed five hits. Hits hammered at his pitches not just brought three runs to Jay’s total score; three walks were also drawn during
his time on the mound.
"I really think if I back off a few percent it might help me, but that's also hard to do when you're trying to get results,” Happ said."Finding a happy medium is hopefully where it'll be at. I'll get it figured it out."
Among players who stood for recovery for the Astros however minimal it was were Jose Altuve and Jason Castro who were able to hit six hits were not able to pile enough runs to challenge the Blue Jays’ ever-increasing lead.
Aiming at finding a spot in Blue Jays rotation, starter Henderson Alvarez spent a decent time on the mound and during two innings he pitched he struck-out three and conceded one run.
This victory has boosted Toronto to second place on the table and has taken their PCT to an impressive .714. Five wins in seven games they have played so far in Spring Training give an indication of their preparation for the upcoming regular season and the
level of competitiveness that they can be for their opponents.
